Evaluating Portrayals of Psychological Disorders Part One

Related Lessons:
Recognizing disorders, Specific disorders

Unit:
Senior year summative project

GOALS
Content Standards: Unit wide goals
Develop persuasive skills consistent with democratic ideals.
Obtain and evaluate information from public sources.
Create an action plan to present information.
Develop a research project and make formal presentations.

ISTE NETS-S

o Creativity and innovation
X Communication and collaboration
X Research and information fluency

X Critical thinking, problem-solving, & decision-making

o Digital citizenship
o Technology operations and concepts
Instructional objective(s):
Students will work together to determine the procedures necessary to answer the following central question of the senior project. How can a consumer of popular media be certain that the portrayal of a psychological disorder has been accurate?
Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of how wikis work by creating a workable template with their chosen groupmates.

ACTION
Before-class preparation:
This project occurs at the end of a quarter-long unit on psychological disorders. Time has been spent covering information about how to recognize when a diagnosis can be possible, how to recognize specific disorders, and information about the implications of diagnosing a patient. The teacher needs to be comfortable with the level of success the students have achieved to this point. The teacher needs to also be certain that a wiki creation site like wikispaces.com is available to all students and that computer lab time is scheduled.

20-30 minutes

(This step may have to be completed during the following lesson due to time constraints.)

Students break into working groups of their choosing.

Groups create a list of questions and points of interest that are needed to answer the central question.

The teacher provides a description of wikis and how they can be used to collaborate with groupmates.

Students are instructed to work with their groups to design a template for the wiki. This template will be used to complete the overall project.

None

None

Access to the Internet and a projector to demonstrate a wiki creation site.

Access to the computer lab and a wiki creation site.

Notes: Student groupings, environmental modifications needed, etc.

MONITOR

Ongoing assessment(s):
The teacher will rotate between the groups to ensure that each members voice is heard and that the groups are creating a meaningful list of questions and research angles to answer the central question. If groups are failing to have meaningful discussions this step can be completed as a whole class activity.
The teacher will evaluate the knowledge of wikis by viewing and critiquing the templates created by the groups.
Accommodations and extensions:
Accommodations and extensions will be dependent on the IEP of the student. Commonly this would include extended time, more specific breakdowns of expectations and timeframes, and possibly the provision of appropriate websites for research.

Backup plan:
This information can be disseminated in research paper form with students doing the research outside of the classroom.

EVALUATE AND EXTEND
Lesson reflections and notes:
There will be a tendency of students to allow one group member to design the wiki and therefore not achieve meaningful experience with their use. The teacher needs to ensure that all members are active.

Instructional objective(s):
Students will research the causes, symptoms, and treatments of specific psychological disorders.
Students will use this knowledge to analyze the portrayal of the psychological disorder as presented in either a book or movie.
Students will create a finished website that presents the information about the specific psychological disorder and their analysis of the chosen media.

Students are instructed to work with their groups to design a template for the wiki. This template will be used to complete the overall project.

Students work within their groups to answer the central question. Each group member will be responsible to for analyzing one disorder and one corresponding piece of media.

Access to the computer lab and wiki creation ste.

Access to the computer lab and a working Internet connection.

Notes: Student groupings, environmental modifications needed, etc.

MONITOR

Ongoing assessment(s):
The teacher will monitor progress by rotating around the lab and ensuring that students are engaged and using appropriate and credible sources of information. Based on these observations the teacher will also be able to determine if the students understand how to develop wikis and if their design idea is appropriate.

There will be a tendency of students to “cut and paste” information from public websites to the sites they are creating. If this seems to be an issue the teacher may want to spend time discussing issues of plagiarism.
